This seminar examines the role of non-state actors, such as NGOs, social movements, and multinational corporations, in international politics. Non-state actors advise international organizations (IOs), participate in decision-making processes, assist in the implementation of resolutions, and monitor international agreements. At the same time, they are often key critics of IOs. We explore empirical research on non-state actors and IOs within the context of cooperation and conflict, focusing on different policy areas such as environmental protection, human rights, development, and trade. We will also discuss research questions and gaps in existing research and explore connections to other topics within the field of international relations. This is an advanced seminar and it builds on previous knowledge on theories and concepts of international relations.
