"Tkhines - Yiddish prayers for private devotion. Like other genres of popular religious literature in Yiddish, these prayers began to appear in print in the sixteenth century and flourished during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Because tkhines, as well as ethical works, collections of pious tales, and Bible paraphrases, were in Yiddish, the vernacular of Ashkenazic Jews, they were available to women, who rarely mastered Hebrew, the sacred tongue and the language of scholarly works. An analysis of women's religious lives forms a necessary corrective to the overwhelming majority of studies on the history of Judaism that rely primarily on sources produced by and for learned men, always a small minority of the Jewish people. Taking the religion of women- and other nonlearned Jews- into account significantly revises our understanding of Ashkenazic Judaism." (Chava Weissler)
