This course provides an in-depth exploration of Nigerian English as a distinct variety within the context of World Englishes. It examines its historical development, linguistic features, and societal role, with a focus on its phonological, morphological, syntactic, lexical, and grammatical characteristics. Particular emphasis is placed on the influence of indigenous Nigerian languages and pidgin, highlighting the innovations and distinctive expressions that define Nigerian English.
By the end of the course, students will gain a comprehensive understanding of the development, structure, and significance of Nigerian English in both local and global contexts.
