Kommentar

The cultural landscape of the Cold War was a site of many contestations. In this class, we will be looking at the history of the Little Magazine as one of these sites of culture, ideology, and resistance. The "Little Magazine" has been called as "this mutating mode of writing, publishing, and circulation" (by Anjali Nerlekar) that goes deeply against the mainstream norms of a literary culture. In the era of the Cold War, especially in the era of the Bandung Conference and the Congress for Cultural Freedom, the little magazine is the forerunner of the print culture that finally culminates as the "zine" in the punk era. In this class, we will be looking at the theoretical and the practical approaches of the Little Magazine. Each week, we will alternatively read theories about the Little Magazine and then look at a Little Magazines of the Cold War from various parts of the world.
